Now that we have the basics out of the way, lets go more in depth into why this book falls flat. The characters are bland and uninteresting. I think if you are nine or older that you can and SHOULD read it, but you may find some scenes upsetting. Just because they both don’t know what they are destined to become doesn’t mean that they are practically the same! Sunny is NOT a Mary Sue! If anything it’s Harry who’s a Mary Sue! He hadn’t even gone on a broom before, and he still manages to chase Draco Malfoy! But back to akata witch. Just because Harry Potter uses a wand to do magic and Sunny uses a juju knife to do juju, does not mean that Nnedi Okorafor is COPYING J.K. There is a lot that is different about the two books. Plus, to those of you who think it’s a Harry Potter rip-off, it’s just a certain genre about a “chosen one” that just happens to be like Harry Potter. But, when I read it on my own in fourth grade, I LOVED it! It was just so interesting. I read some other reviews, and I don’t know how they said that this book is a Harry Potter rip-off! I first encountered the book when our teacher started reading it to the class in second grade, and I admit, it was scary for me then.
